At the end of 2013 and beginning of 2014, more and more product announcements arrive from golf manufacturers. Two of the biggest, TaylorMade and Callaway, both have new families of clubs on the way.
TaylorMade’s is called JetSpeed and includes driver, fairway woods and rescue clubs. The Taylormade JetSpeed driver is TaylorMade’s first to incorporate a speed pocket behind the face, helping the face flex more and rebound with more “oomph” as a boost to ball speed. The speed pocket promotes less spin, and has a strong effect on ball speed for shots struck below the middle of the face. Given that’s where most shots are struck by recreational golfers, that’s a good thing.
The crown is matte black and the clubface is silver. The driver includes the company’s Loft-Sleeve technology, and golfers will be able to adjust the stated loft up or down by as much as 1.5 degrees. And the low-forward center of gravity position helps reduce spin, especially on higher lofts.
Callaway’s is called X2 Hot, building on the success of this year’s Callaway X Hot driver. The X2 Hot family includes driver, fairway woods, hybrids and irons, all with both Standard and Pro models. All the clubs in the X2 Hot family focus on the big three: distance, speed, forgiveness. How does the design of the Callaway X2 Hot driver attack those goals? The Hyper Speed Face is a larger design with improved stress distribution across the face, a lighter weight, and greater ball speed off the face.
The X2 Hot drivers include Callaway’s Advanced Optifit Hosel that allows golfers to independently adjust loft and lie – loft by one degree down or one or two degrees up. For the X2 Hot driver, the Standard has a 460cc clubhead; lofts of 9, 10.5 and 13.5 degrees; and the stock shaft is the Aldila Tour Blue. The Pro model has a 440cc clubhead size, an 8.5-degree loft, includes an external 7-gram weight, with an Aldila Tour Green shaft stock.
Overall, those clubs proved popular with golf consumers. Distance through swing speed and ball speed. If you’re regular on the site you may have heard terms like gear effect, spin loft, spin axis. If these are new to you or you need a refresher I would recommend checking out these videos, and then you will get lots of good info.
